An example of why an application to join the natural perfumery diploma course may be denied: One applicant answered the question "Why did you chose natural perfumery?" by saying
"It is easy, affordable and it's cheap for people who can't afford it. "
This is actually false. True natural perfumes are more expensive to create than perfumes containing synthetics. This is because authentic natural essences are more expensive to purchase and more difficult to source than synthetics. The outlay for the course kit or the equivalent, if sourcing essences from other recommended suppliers, is expensive. If synthetics or fake essences are used in the finals submission a diploma will not be awarded until the submission is reformulated sans synthetics. The idea that Natural Perfumery is easy is also false. It is actually much more difficult to create authentic natural perfumes due to the fact that natural essences are more complex than their synthetic counterparts. It takes experience and a skilled hand and nose to create sparkling long lasting perfumes using only natural materials. NPA have demonstrated since 2008 that we are not in the business of doling out diplomas to just anyone who pays the course fees and trundles lackadaisical through the course work submitting a questionable perfume creation at the end. There is real work involved in doing this course. It is not easy and it is therefore not for the faint hearted. The diploma really means something to those who are awarded.
